GREEN ROOF MAKING
Oil on Canvas, 24" x 30"
Frame: N/A

This is a group of women in the Philippines making roof shingles out of Nipa plam leaves. The "green" in the title is not really because of the green color of the nipa leaves. It would eventually turn to brown as it's seasoned by the elements just like the roof in the background. Sometime in between the color could pass for yellow, note the patch of newer roof shingles on the roof. A nipa roof lasts between 5-10 years and is used mostly in the rural areas. Aside from being affordable it provides excellent insulation against the tropical heat. The "green" refers to the environmentally friendly process by which it is being made: completely by hand, no fossil fuel used, just pure womanpower.
